The Anatomy of the Perfect Journal

A Guide to Memory Keeping

A journal is perhaps our most intimate accessory. It’s one that should slip into our handbag as easily as our favorite lipstick, yet be sturdy enough to preserve every champagne-soaked revelation, to-do list, and midnight confession. As a twenty-something collecting memories (and plenty of regrets), I'm crafting these chronicles not just for my future self, but for my future daughter who might one day inherit these bound collections of adventures, mishaps, and discoveries.

So allow me to share my carefully considered criteria for the ideal everything journal, along with the tools that turn fleeting moments into permanent treasures. After all, the best stories deserve a worthy vessel.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

First, let's discuss structure: I insist on a breakable spine that, like a well-worn leather jacket, only improves with age. Nothing derails the flow of writing quite like wrestling with a book that refuses to stay open, which is why I demand pages that lay perfectly flat on any surface.

Size matters, darling. I like my journals to be easy enough to slide into a medium-sized handbag without taking too much real-estate. Your best memories happen when we least expect them—you'll want this companion ready for impromptu adventures, not gathering dust on your nightstand.

The paper quality is also crucial here. I prefer a matte finish that allows ink to dry quickly without smearing.

As for the cover, I favor something durable yet flexible, like leather or structured plastic that can withstand being tossed around in my bag while maintaining its composure.

Aesthetically, I look for something quietly confident.

But perhaps the most important—and often overlooked—quality is a secure strap to keep my mementos safe and sound and from pages falling out.

JOURNALS I’VE LOVED (in no particular order)
  1. Louise Carmen Notebook: Though pricey, the craftsmanship make it worthwhile

  1. Traveler's Company Leather Journal: Ages beautifully, with customizable inserts

  1. Leuchtturm1917 Softcover: Perfect balance of durability and flexibility

  1. V&M Persian Jewel Woven Leather Journal: Found at Barnes & Noble, I am such a sucker for a Bottega Veneta-inspired intrecciato leather weave. It's the one I use, and while it lacks a strap, an eyelet ribbon solves this elegantly.

  1. Moleskine Classic Journal: A cult classic for a reason

  1. Castelli Milano Notebook: Notable for its sophisticated color combinations

ESSENTIAL COMPANIONS
  1. Fujifilm Mini Link 2: Prints instant sticky-backed photos

  1. Kodak Printamatic Full Color Instant Print Digital Camera: Affordable option with sticky-back photo paper included

  1. Double-sided tape roller: Essential for clean adhesion

Happy Journaling!

xx Faith
